Summer greetings PDF Print E-mail

We hope you are enjoying the Summer break - even if the weather isn't really summer- like!!

We want to wish all those going on Camp and Holidays that the weather improves, and that you have a great time; and for those who have already been, then we hope you enjoyed yourselves and the weather was kind to you. For international travellers we hope you have a great time too and don't forget to send in some photos please!

We’re sure you haven’t missed the Olympics on our televisions over the last couple of weeks - hasn't been it been amazing?!! It’s been fantastic to see so many young women competing and winning; a real inspiration to all our girls and young women!! And if you managed to get tickets to see some of the events we are sure that you really had a fantastic time, and we’re looking forward to hearing about your experiences.

Somerset North has quite a few volunteers at the Games, so we’re sure they will have some great stories and lots of photos. If you have any photos of the Olympics, please send a few to Patric; we would love to see them, and maybe use some!

September is fast -approaching and we will be back in our Units for the Autumn Term - keep your eyes on the County Calendar for events coming up - such as the Paralympics Trip, Brownie Arts Day, and of course County Day in October.

Thank you to all of you who work so hard for our girls, for the wonderful opportunities they are offered, and all the activities they take part in - keep up the good work - because without you, we wouldn't have the girls.

Karen and Sue

World Thinking Day greetings to you all! PDF Print E-mail

Thinking Day logo

We are sure that you have some great activities for your Units to celebrate Thinking Day, and to give some idea to your girls the importance of belonging to a huge, worldwide organisation.

We hope that you have a really good time in remembering this important day, whether you are having a church service, photos of someone’s visit to a World Centre, food, a campfire or through Unit activities, just enjoy and celebrate!

You are one of approximately 5,000 members of Somerset North, and a member of Girlguiding UK.

Girlguiding UK is a member of WAGGGS (World Association of Girl Guides & Girl Scouts), which has 10 million members in 144 countries, making it the largest organisation for girls and women in the world.

Members worldwide share the same Guiding traditions, ethics and aims, despite ethnic, cultural religious and socio-economic differences- that’s something that the World could learn from……

Doesn’t it make you feel proud to belong?!

Happy Thinking Day!

From Sue & Karen

Hello from Karen and Sue! PDF Print E-mail

We were both surprised and happy when we were asked to be Joint County Commissioners for Somerset North; this is the first time a job share has been done for the County Commissioner post, and we look forward to the next five years, and hope that you will be pleased with our plans, several of which you have suggested.

Between us we have 75 years as adult leaders, and have held various appointments, the last being Division Commissioner for Clevedon & Portishead, and County Outdoor Activity Adviser

We are both Unit Guiders, so we know what you do for your units is very important to the girls, and that a lot of time and hard work goes into planning lots of activities, and we thank you for your continued support.

We hope you are enjoying the summer break and that if you have been on Camp or Holiday that you had a great time; and if you are getting ready to go, we hope you have fun and that the weather stays fine!

Can we ask you to take photos of some of your activities and Email them to us, so we can include some in future presentations’ & publications.

Saturday 8th October will be our next County Day and there are some great activities to do, sessions to attend, and stalls to visit!

We are looking forward to seeing you there so please come up and speak to us, as we would like to get to know as many people as possible.

Also, we’d really like to be invited to your units, and to any District events; we want to enjoy your Guiding with you!

Karen & Sue

Sue's last blog - May 2011 PDF Print E-mail

Our first County Day for 18 months on 14th May was a great success and the start of a new era for Girlguiding Somerset North.  After five wonderful years as County Commissioner I officially handed over the role to our two new Joint County Commissioners, Karen Rees and Sue Betts.

In a short ceremony I presented Karen and Sue with their new Commissioner Badges and wished them every success as they start their new adventure. Both Karen and Sue have a great deal of experience in guiding and also in their professional lives which, I am sure, will help them take the County forward.
