Redcliffe Bay Guides Centenary Guide Camp August 2010
Redcliffe Bay Guides celebrated their Centenary with a very special Guide Camp in the final week of the school holidays, arriving in January and leaving six days later on Christmas Day. No, they hadn’t made a TARDIS from a bag of tent poles and a piece of string, it was Jan “Ozzy” Harrison’s way of getting the girls to mark 100 years of Girlguiding by experiencing a year of great British traditions in a single week.
In this way, the guides tossed pancakes on Sunday, hunted Easter Eggs on Monday, learned Willow Weaving and country dancing on Tuesday, and set off for a day at the seaside on Wednesday. Sadly, the weather wasn’t in on the surprise, but with a trip to the cinema instead of the beach, eating fish and chips under a shelter then dodging the rain at Carter’s Steam Fair on the Beach Lawns in the afternoon, their “holiday” was voted quite typical and very enjoyable!
Thursday was autumn with weather to match, and rain threatening to ruin Bonfire Night, but we all kept warm and dry in the huge party tent, making lanterns for our first indoor camp fire evening. The last day of camp was Christmas Day, complete with a visit from Santa and presents for all, with the sun making a very welcome late appearance so that we could pack away our dry tents until next year.
This was the first year that Guides and leaders from 1st Redcliffe Bay Guides had joined the annual camp with 3rd Redcliffe Bay Guides, and they all thoroughly enjoyed sharing the experience. They are grateful to local organizations and charitable trusts including Portishead & NW Town Council, Rotary Club of Portishead & Quartet Community Foundation Grassroots Grants for helping to buy the extra equipment needed, and are already looking forward to camping again next year.
