Ten Tors 2013 achievements PDF Print E-mail

What a year! We had a bumper number of Guides attempting the 35 mile event and representation in both the 45 and 55 miles events.  You will have also seen the news earlier this month about the most challenging of conditions for Ten Tors for many years! It was almost called off Saturday night. So it was unsurprising that many teams did not make it to the finish in time.

In the 35 miles event, 16 Guides started the training and it finished with 11 taking part, joined by an explorer, to make up the 2 teams of 6 with the historical names of Wraxall Rangers and Yeo Vale Guides. The 2 teams comprised of Guides from  9 different units. Congratulations to the Wraxall Rangers team who completed the gruelling event and to the Yeo Vale team, all 6 of whom toughed it out to Tor 9 but ran out of time. Everyone will have learned so much about themselves,  their  team, leadership, survival skills and of course, navigation! Here are some pictures of the intrepid adventurers!

We will soon be recruiting for 2014 so if you are up for it tell your Guide Leader or contact the Somerset North Walking Adviser!

May Guides Walking Adventure PDF Print E-mail

A total of 17 guides from 5 different units took part in the first SNGG Walking Adventure on 4 and 5 May.

Following a variety of routes from 9 to 11 kilometers on the first day and 8 to 10 kilometers on the second, the girls criss-crossed the Mendips taking in Cheddar and Wedmore; hills, gorge and levels, navigating and geocaching as they went. Ice pops were a welcome pick up at one of our rendezvous spots on day one!  At the overnight stop the Guides prepared and cooked their own food, enjoyed a lively campfire and herded sheep! Everyone remained determined to carry their packs to the finish on day two in glorious (and warm) sunshine! There were so many stories.

Many thanks to Alison (Outdoor Activities Advisor) and Mike (Walking Advisor) for organising the event and, Naomi Russell (Outdoor Residential Advisor), Alice Kerly (Queens Guide Award Advisor), Anne MacDonald (Boating Advisor), Emily MacDonald and Ami Warrellow (Guide Leaders) for supporting it so expertly. The next Walking Adventure in June is already full.

Summer greetings PDF Print E-mail

We hope you are enjoying the Summer break - even if the weather isn't really summer- like!!

We want to wish all those going on Camp and Holidays that the weather improves, and that you have a great time; and for those who have already been, then we hope you enjoyed yourselves and the weather was kind to you. For international travellers we hope you have a great time too and don't forget to send in some photos please!

We’re sure you haven’t missed the Olympics on our televisions over the last couple of weeks - hasn't been it been amazing?!! It’s been fantastic to see so many young women competing and winning; a real inspiration to all our girls and young women!! And if you managed to get tickets to see some of the events we are sure that you really had a fantastic time, and we’re looking forward to hearing about your experiences.

Somerset North has quite a few volunteers at the Games, so we’re sure they will have some great stories and lots of photos. If you have any photos of the Olympics, please send a few to Patric; we would love to see them, and maybe use some!

September is fast -approaching and we will be back in our Units for the Autumn Term - keep your eyes on the County Calendar for events coming up - such as the Paralympics Trip, Brownie Arts Day, and of course County Day in October.

Thank you to all of you who work so hard for our girls, for the wonderful opportunities they are offered, and all the activities they take part in - keep up the good work - because without you, we wouldn't have the girls.

Karen and Sue
