MUSIC IN SOMERSET NORTH

The role of the County Music Adviser

Hello!

I am Teresa Aldridge your County Music Adviser and I would like to tell you what I can offer you and the girls in your Unit, District and Division.

‘CAN’T SING?? – WON’T SING??’

If you would like me to lead a singing session with your girls then please invite me along to your Unit meeting and not only will we all sing together but I can guarantee that we will also have lots of fun making music together!

I would like to encourage all leaders across the County to include more music and singing in to their Unit programmes by:

  • Leading singing sessions
  • Teaching a variety of songs appropriate to the ages of the girls
  • Showing how to use handchimes and simple percussion instruments
  • Introducing various musical activities

Suitable for all sections - Rainbow/Brownies/Guide/Senior Section Unit meetings including Trefoil Guild meetings.

To organise a singing and musical evening for your Unit please drop me an email giving me a selection of dates, the time of your meeting, your meeting place (with directions please!) and approximately how many girls you have in your Unit so I can prepare an appropriate programme for you and your girls for the evening.

If you would like to invite a neighbouring Unit to join us, please do so as the more the merrier!

Cost: A donation to cover my petrol costs.

CAMPFIRES AT CAMPS AND HOLIDAYS

I am available to lead campfires and singing sessions at Unit camps and holidays (both indoor and outdoors).

Please drop me an email giving me the date and time of your event, the venue (with directions please!) approximately how many girls and the age range of the girls who will so I can prepare an appropriate programme for the event.

Cost: A donation to cover my petrol costs.

LARGE SCALE CAMPFIRES AND EVENTS

I am happy to lead large scale campfires and singing sessions at District and Division events (both indoor and outdoors).

‘SING ALONG WITH ME’ SITE

This is an extremely useful site that has words of the songs and if you have a sound card you can click and hear the tune!

Please give it a try here!

SCOUT & GUIDE NATIONAL ORCHESTRA COURSES

The National Scout & Guide Symphony Orchestra (NSGSO) offer summer residential courses including full board, accommodation and a professional conductor plus eight sectional tutors.

Preference will be given to under 26 years olds but over 25’s may be offered places where they are short on numbers in a section.

ALL applicants must be:

  • A member of the Scout or Guide Association
  • Aged 13 – 30 on 1st August (year applicable to when the course is being held)
  • Proficient player of at least one orchestral instrument (minimum Grade 5)

The application forms are usually available at the beginning of each year for the course being held that summer. The approximate cost is £350 for 8 nights.

Please let me know if you are interested so that I can arrange to send out an application form to you as soon as they become available as these courses are very popular and do get booked up very quickly.

ARE YOU MUSICAL AND WANT TO DO MORE?

If so, how about working towards the Musical Activities Qualification?

This is a modular based qualification for those of you wishing to lead Rainbows, Brownies, Guides or Senior Section in music-based activities.

I mentor and support leaders working towards the Musical Activities Qualification. The Musical Activities qualification has separate modules for Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section so is suitable for any section leader.

Please first discuss working towards this qualification with your District Commissioner before contacting me to set up an initial planning meeting.

This qualification is great fun for the whole unit and based on my past experiences working with various leaders it will take around six months to complete.

If you are interested and want to know more details about how to start then
