Welcome to Somermead

Girlguiding Somerset and Girlguiding Somerset North's Campsite

Somermead is the joint campsite for Girlguiding Somerset North and Girlguiding Somerset. It is located close to Wedmore (6 miles from Cheddar), and consists of three campsites spread over about three acres. Each site has its own toilet block, fire shelter and altar fire and is suitable for all types of camping. There is also a shower block near site one and a composting toilet next to the toilet block on site two.

The most exciting recent development at Somermead has been the building of the new lodge. This will provide accommodation for 24 girls, 4 adults and includes disabled facilities, kitchens, showers and a large activity room.

There is a quiet and peaceful area at the north east end of the site, which is fenced off, but accessible by a stile and gate. You are welcome to use this area for your Guides' Own Services or ceremonies, or just as a calm and peaceful place to sit and think.

Location PDF Print E-mail

Map reference: ST 422488 (1:50,000) Sheet 182

The site is 2 miles from Wedmore, 6 miles from Cheddar, and 8 miles from Burnham on Sea.

From Wedmore take the B3139 towards Highbridge, then just past the church turn right into Lascot Hill (*). Continue along this road, passing the Isles of Wedmore Golf Course on the right, and then take the first left after the golf club which is Snipefield Lane. Pass the Old Orchard Nurseries on the left and take the next left turn on to a single track lane. This lane leads to the campsite. There is limited parking/turning space at the end of the track.

From the M5, leave at junction 22. Take the Highbridge turning and almost immediately take the turning to Mark and Wedmore. When you get to Wedmore and pass the school on your left, take the fourth turning on the left (Lascot Hill) and follow the directions from * above.

Information for visitors PDF Print E-mail

Arrivals and departures: Please notify Sue Wild of your time of arrival. She will arrange for someone to meet you at the site with keys and show you around.

Access to the site is by a narrow lane so if arriving by coach it is advisable to drop off at the end of the lane. Coaches can get down the lane but during the building work we are not sure of the state of the lane - please ask when you book.

Campsites: Please use the fire shelter and altar fire for cooking (if cooking with wood). There is a tarpaulin for the roof of the fire shelter if needed. This is in the toilet block for your site along with your incinerator, metal bucket and shovel. Please dispose of the ashes, WHEN COLD, along the hedgerows.

If using patrol fires (these are NOT provided) please keep them to the edges of the field. NO turfing is allowed on the sites.

Camp Fire Area: If there is more than one group camping, please liaise with the others over use of the camp fire area or join together for a joint camp fire.

Cars: Cars must only be parked on the hard standing.

Charges: These cover water, electricity and wood, but please use all of them sparingly. We may have to make a small charge for wood if we have to buy it in. Elsan fluid for the toilets is not provided so please bring your own. Please make sure that camp fees are paid at the end of your stay or by arrangement.

Fridge/Freezer: Please ask about the location of these.

Noise: Please make sure that there is silence after 11.00pm. Noise carries a long way and we don’t want our neighbours disturbed.

Rubbish: Somermead is a ‘green’ site so please use the recycling bins provided. Glass, tins and paper are collected by Somerset Recycling from the end of the lane on alternate Wednesdays.

Please take recycling bins to the end of the lane the night before collection and collect at the end of the day. As these are only collected fortnightly there may be recycling left from a previous camp so we would appreciate it if you could take their bins for collection as well. Thank you.

Please rinse all bottles, jars and tins before recycling (wasps and flies can be a problem during hot weather) and burn any other rubbish, including waste food.

Please take anything that is not recyclable or can’t be burnt to the tip in Cheddar (next to the Leisure Centre) or take it home!

Shop: Due to the building work there will be a mobile shop this summer organised by Betty Morgan. She will visit you at the beginning of your stay to arrange days and times for opening, or alternatively you can ring her on 01934 712366. The shop sells a range of goods including t-shirts, tea towels, badges, pens, notebooks and sweets. We would ask you not to bring your own tuck as the profits from the shop help to keep the site prices down.

Showers: Each site has its own numbered cubicle. The fourth shower is out of action for this summer. Showers are limited to 5 mins only due to difficulties with water disposal. Please liaise with other camps on site if you want to use more than your numbered shower. We ask you to keep a note of the number of showers used and pay with the camp fee.

Toilets: Each site has its own block of three toilets. Guiders are asked to supervise the emptying. Nothing other than toilet waste is to put in the sewage disposal point.

There is a composting toilet on site 2, which can be used by the other sites if site 2 is unoccupied. Please make sure the instructions in the toilet are followed, otherwise the toilet will not work.

Please burn all sanitary pads and dressings or dispose of with non recyclable rubbish.

Water: There are water taps on each site, please use sparingly. Please do not use the tap area for washing up or use the drains for greasy water. Please use grease traps near the hedges and move frequently.

Wood: There is a woodshed to the right of the gate. Please do not cut wood from the trees or hedges.
